So you thought the Amiga was never advertised!!

Amiga advertising has been a rarity since its launch in 1985. In contrast to IBM, Apple, and even Atari, Commodore and its successors failed to attract a wider audience to the Amiga. This has made Amiga advertisements an area of particular interest.

Education Initiative '88
In 1987 Commodore made a conscious decision to commit to education. The company liased with the Department of Education and Science (DES), the National Council for Education Technology (NCET) and Local Education Authorities (LEA's) to establish what was really needed and wanted by schools. In 1988, this resulted in Commodore's Education Initiative, which included three main elements: specialist education dealers, preferential pricing for education and identification of software needs.

Amiga on the BIG Screen
Over the past 15 years the Amiga has been advertised in a number of places. The most prominant advertisements are not made in magazine features but in the real world. Over the years Commodore attempted to promote the Amiga in any way they could, from sponsership of Chelsea F.C. to projecting it on the scoreboard at the Miami Dolphins stadium.

CDTV Billboard Advert
Soon after the launch of the CDTV, Commodore took the unusual step (for them) of advertising the machine on a billboard. This fact will be especially shocking to those who believed that the company never advertised the Amiga. The ad went on display in London's Cromwell Street during September 1991, and featured guitars, drums, speakers, and various other objects. The billboard proclaims "CDTV Sound and Pictures, Words and Pictures, All on a Compact Disc". Below this is a picture of the CDTV and the 'It's Nothing Short of Revolutionary' catchphrase. The ad was later shipped for display in Glasgow, via Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds.

Japanese A1200 Advert
Traditionally, the Amiga has failed to attract attention in the land of the rising sun. However, the launch of the A1200 amid a blaze of publicity changed this. Have You Got What it Takes?
It is hard to believe that Commodore actually spent money on advertising, but here it is. The company spent 3.5 million UK pounds and worked with a new ad agency to come up with a series of advertisements for newspaper and magazines during the pre-Christmas 1992 period. The Laing Henry agency based their designs upon research that showed that computers were the most popular hobby for young people and that the Amiga is the dream machine. A Laing Henry executive commented "If money was no object, that's what kids would have."
