AmigaOS 4 Concept Developer System
It was 1998 and Amiga Inc. were ready to introduce the Amiga
community to their next generation system. To provide a steady
stream of information they released a concept image of the AmigaNG
developer system (above) and images of the proposed AmigaOS 4 GUI.
This was to be followed by an official announcement of a strategic
partnership at the World of Amiga show. Thousands of desperate
Amiga users flocked to the London show, but Amiga Inc. had suddenly
took a vow of silence.
A few days later a rumour was spread that Amiga Inc. had
intended to announce a partnership with Be to use the BeOS kernel.
It suggested a disagreement between the two companies resulted in
the complete break down of negotiations and the announcement was
called off at the last minute.
A year and a half later, the patents filed by Amiga Development,
LLC during 1998 were granted. They referred to the Pentium Pro and
'shadow processors', creating speculation that the company would
have created a desktop SMP system. The screenshots also suggest
that Amiga Inc. were readying the Amiga for the convergence market,
providing access to a range of Interactive TV features.
Unfortunately, Amiga Inc. never explained the purpose of the
concept machine. It could have represented a consumer Amiga model
or the Developer "bridge" system
that was announced later. A few months later Amiga Inc. would form
another alliance, this time with QSSL, and the AmigaOS 4 concept
developer system would never be mentioned again.
