AMIE Concept Designs
On April 1st 2000 at the Amiga 2k show in St. Louis the newly
formed Amiga Corp introduced a series of concept designs that could
be a glimpse of a next generation Amiga. The designs, created by
three Disney animators for free, were intended to give an early
indication of how the Amiga would break away from the norm. Instead
it would follow in the iMACs path to produce a more diverse appeal.
An interesting point was that three Disney employees donated
these designs free of charge to show support for their favorite
animation design platform. In an article by Amiga Flame, Patrick
Roberts one of the Disney designers, gave an insight why they
produced the concept designs,
“The three of us provided the artwork because we
are devoted Amiga users and fans, and did so offering to help out
in what ever way we could (plus Bill McEwen is cool). We made the
offer to help bring Hollywood production quality to any additional
content that Bill and Amiga would like us to create (and the offer
still stands). If everyone does what they can, we'll have a great
platform again”.
However, there was mixed reaction from attendees. In a post to Moo
Bunny, Corinna Cohn described the designs as "either ugly,
impractacle, impossible, or all three." The designs do seem...
unusual to say the least. They appear to have been used as an
example of the support that Amiga has and highlight alternatives to
the standard PC grey box. They are not an indication of definite
future
The Disney animators, Patrick Roberts, Michael Daugherty, and
Arthur Argote, who created the designs are currently working on the
new Disney movie Dinosaurs.
Thanks to Roger Wyatt for the concept designs. You can read his
