To build support for the Amiga DE, Amiga Inc. have launched a standalone application
that will allow Windows/Linux users to play Amiga DE games using their existing
operating system. The 'player' consists of a stripped down version of the developer
environment found on the Amiga SDK. Once installed, the user can try one of
the several games that are included, or purchase a new game on Amiga Inc's secure
site.
The reaction to the DE Player launch was criticised by many Amiga users
who were expecting a major product for the DE. In particular, the price
point was considered to be expensive for such a product in comparison to
similar products by Real and Sun Microsystems (the RealPlayer and JVM are
freely distributed). In contrast to these companies, Amiga Inc. are
a small developer that do not have the cash reserves or developer channels
to finance such a 'gift'.
The Amiga press release demonstrates several of the games currently
available or being developed for the Amiga DE.
