Format
The CLI implementation of Format requires more information than just the name, and really isn't worth the bother that it causes. However, for you die-hard Shell users the syntax is:
FORMAT DRIVE NAME
E.g. FORMAT DRIVE DF0: NAME FISH
This simply formats the drive of your choice, in this case DF0: giving it the name of FISH:
The Amiga also allows extra syntax to be added onto the end of the format command to control its usage. If you are using Workbench 2 or below, this will be the only way that you can access these options as they are not implemented into the Format or Duplicate GUI.
FORMAT DRIVE NAME [FFS][NOICONS][QUICK]
FFS activates fastfilesystem to allow more to be fitted onto a disk. NOICONS tells the Amiga not to include the trashcan on the disk.
QUICK is for previously formatted disks that do not require properly formatting. This shortens the time required to format a disk, but any checksum errors present on the disk will remain.
