UAE- Ultimate Amiga Emulator
Developer: Multiple individuals
Platform: DOS, Windows, Macintosh, Amiga. etc
Status: GPL |
UAE was the first Amiga emulator to appear and remains the most popular. Although
the acronym initially stood for Unusable Amiga Emulator when it was launched
in 1996, it has since become the Ultimate or Ubiquitous Amiga Emulator. Thanks
to the original authors' desire to promote Amiga emulation, the source code
was released under the General Public License. This allows anyone to develop
the code and port it to different platforms. This has resulted in versions being
ported to Windows, MacOS, MacOS X, Amiga DE, and even the AmigaOS itself.
In 2000 the Windows port (WinUAE) received a massive speed boost, thanks to
the implementation of a JiT (Just in Time) compiler. This improves speed by
translating 68k code into x86 code before it is needed. The current version
can emulate 68040 processors, although AGA remains a problematic issue.
A copy of UAE can be downloaded from hundreds of emulation sites (such
as RetroGames). However, the downloading
of an Amiga ROM image is illegal. If you do not have access to a real Amiga,
but want to remain on the right side of the law, a legal ROM image can
be found on Cloanto's 'Amiga Forever' CD.
