"The Bensheimer" A4000T Concept Designs
After Escom bought the Amiga in 1995 they commissioned a redesign
of the existing Amiga models to rid them of the Commodore 'wedge'
look. The first of the machines to be redesigned was the A4000, and
modifications to the A1200, CD32, and C64 were planned (but never
shown).
The 'new' A4000T concept design was created by Bjorn Rybakken of
Bates Strategic Design, with sculpturing done by Walter Ostern, of
FAMO. Dr. Peter Kittel reveals that this design was known as "The
Bensheimer", ala Steinway or Boesendorffer grand pianos, due to the
fact that Amiga Technologies were sited at Bensheim.
Unfortunately (or fortunately if, like me, you think the design
is awful), the A4000T was never released in its new green colours.
It is likely that pressure from Escom forced Amiga Technologies to
release the A4000T as soon as possible, delaying the upgraded
system until the end of 1996. By that time Amiga Technologies would
have more pressing things on their mind, like finding a buyer after
their parent company, Escom went bust.
