LASER PRINTER- It creates the image by firing a
charge a charge at a photosensitive drum, which then attracts the
toner to it. The image is then transferred from the drum to the
paper.
LCD- Liquid Crystal Display.
LAN- Local Area Network. A network that only
serves a small area. This may be useful for sharing files and
printers between computers.
LED- Light Emitting Diode. A device that is
used to display text in a backlit window.
LIBRARY- A set of functions used by a number of
programs to decrease the amount of code needed by a program. These
are stored in the LIBS: directory and in ROM.
LIGHT PEN- An alternative input device used in
place of the mouse. These are used by holding it to the screen and
"drawing". A fascinating device that has become little more than a
gimmick in the late 90's
LIGHTWAVE- A professional 3D rendering
application that can be used with the Video Toaster. It is used on
most sci-fi programs including Babylon 5 and Star Trek. The current
Amiga version is 5.5. Available for a number of operating systems
and processors.
LINUX- A powerful multi-tasking OS based upon
Linux.
LOCALE- Part of the Amigas system responsible
for multi-lingual support.
LOW LEVEL- A form of programming used by
languages such as C/++ and assembly to access the hardware
directly.
LOW LEVEL FORMATTING- A process of formatting a
disk so that there is nothing on it. This should only be done on a
SCSI hard drive; low level formatting an IDE drive will DESTROY
it.
LURK- Listening to a newsgroup or mailing list
