NE2000- Originally used to describe a particular make of card NE2000 has come to describe a widely used standard that uses Ethernet. At the moment it is not possible to use NE2000 cards unless you own a GoldenGate 2 bridgeboard.

NET COMPUTER- A diskless computer that can be set up easily using JAVA. This allows software to be run from a main server. The Amigas interpretation of this was the ill-fated ED machine.

NETIQUETTE- A number of written and unwritten rules for behaviour on the internet. For example, try to be polite, do not swear if the forum will include minors, etc.

NET PC- A very basic PC that runs the Internet standard, with a new version of Windows running in the background.

NETWORK- The connection of 2+ computers allowing data sharing between each. For example, allowing a machine access to another machines hard drive. There are two types:

peer to peer- every computer is equal and client-server- the network is controlled by one main computer.

NEWSGROUPS- Discussion boards that centre around a particular subject. For example, ALT.TV.FRIENDS would be based upon the American TV sitcom Friends. May also include images as well as text.

NFS- Network File System. Allows computers over a network to access each others drives.

NON-VOLATILE MEMORY- A type of memory that stores contents even when there is no power going to it. Variations include EPROM, ROM and Flash ROM. These are used in digital cameras, some stereo's and your very own Amiga, both in the Kickstart ROM and the CD32's non-volatile memory, used for game saves.

NTSC- National Television Standards Council. A TV standard used by American and Japanese televisions.

NULL MODEM- A cable that connects two computers, Amiga, or PC, to each other by using two female connectors to communicate to the serial port.

NUMERIC KEYPAD- The group of keys present on the right-hand side of the keyboard. many feel that these are ergonomically easier to use than the main keyboard. The A600 lacks these keyboards although they could theoretcially be added through the use of a keyboard interface.
