We didn't just buy the Amiga for Christmas"
- Petro Tyschtschenko, moments before announing the PowerAmiga
At the 2nd annual Video Toaster User expo on November 2nd, 1995,
Petro Tyschtschenko announced the development of the next
generation Amiga- the PowerAmiga. The PowerPC-based system was due
for release in 1997 by Escom. It is uncertain how development
progressed on the proposed system, the bankruptcy of their parent
company, Escom cut short the possibility of a new PPC Amiga. What
is known is that it was to include a new version of the operating
system (version 4), featuring memory protection and virtual memory.
On the hardware side, AmigaOS 4 would have run on a 100MHz+ PPC 604
and offer greater support for standardised parts such as PCI. A
strategic alliance was also proposed between Apple and the Escom
subsiduary, Amiga Tech GmbH allowing the Amiga to make an easy
transition from 68k to PPC, just as the Mac has.
