SCALING- Alters the size of an image. This is
used in 3D games to make the object look further away/nearer.
SCANNER- A device that converts pictures or
text from the surface of an object (such as the print on a
newspaper) into a computer image.
SCAN RATE- The rate lines are updated per
second. The Amiga is linked to the TV standard of 15KHz (15
thousand lines per second), whilst PCs, Macs and graphic card based
Amigas can go over the 30KHz required for many monitors.
SCART- A 21-pin connector that sends video,
audio and RGB in one socket.
SCRIPT- A text file that, when run executes a
number of commands or programs. Also known on PC's as a batch
file.
SCSI- Small Computer System Interface. A
standard form of interface used by the Amiga, Macintosh, Atari ST,
and PC for connecting devices, such as hard drives and CD-ROM. It
is technically better than the IDE standard, although this is
rapidly changing.
SECAM- The TV standard used in France, slightly
better than PAL.
SERIAL PORT- An interface used for the transfer
of information. It is slower than the Parallel port and is used for
a modem, MIDI interfaces and networking.
SHELL- Also called the CLI. This is a program
that allows you to type commands into the keyboard.
SIMM- Single Inline Memory Module. A standard
of installing memory into your computer.
SIZING GADGET- A gadget that is present on most
Workbench windows in the lower right corner used to alter the size
of the windows.
SMOOTHING- Also known as anti-aliasing. This
gets rid of an images jagged edge to make them look smoother.
SMPTE- Society of Motion Picture and Television
Engineers.
SNAPSHOT- To save the position of a window or
icon.
SOUND CARD- Also known as a Sound Blaster. A
card required for an Intel PC for it to produce anything better
than a few beeps.
SOUND SAMPLER- A device that turns an audio
signal into a computer waveform.
SRAM- Static RAM. A form of memory faster than
DRAM memory. In many PCs it is used for the cache.
STACK- An area of memory that a programs uses
for temporary storage.
STARTUP-SEQUENCE- The script file that is
executed when the Amiga boots.
SVGA- SuperVideo Graphics Array. A standard PC
video card capable of displaying 256 colours (8 bit images), in
resolutions up to 1280x1024.
