The Ultimate Games Machine

The Ultimate Games Machine
Developer: Amiga Format
Month of presentation: September 1989, Issue 2.

This futuristic machine was Amiga Format's concept design for the ultimate gaming system back in 1989. The specifications were based upon a range of opinions from programmers and the Amiga Format team on what would make the perfect Amiga. In addition, two concept designs were drawn to illustrate how the machines may look.
View Cray lookalike (31k)
View Flat-screen machine (38.7k)

The machine specifications placed a number of features on the agenda:

CPU 68030 or '040 (on an rack-mounted CPU unit)
Graphics Hardware sprites of any size
Memory 2 - 8Mb of RAM as standard
Display 256 - 512 colours on screen from a palette of 16.7 million (HAM was seen as unusuable).
dual monitor support and two mice to control the independent screens
Audio built-in MIDI and stereo sound sampler
Storage 3.5/5.25-inch floppy drive, CD-ROM, 80Mb SCSI hard drive
Operating System Built-in OS support for Memory Management
genlock and scanner.
Emulation Unix and Mac emulation as standard
Others a waterproof keyboard and pause key for games

The machine described on this page is the product of speculation and the desires by various Amiga magazines on what would make the perfect Amiga. In other words, THEY ARE PURE FICTION. They reveal a great deal on the state of the market at the time and the perceived needs of the Amiga consumer.
