Workbench 2.1 Upgrade Notes

The AmigaOS 2.1 package was only available as an upgrade. It differs from almost every other version by consisting only of the Workbench disks. It still used the Kickstart 2.04/2.05 ROM found in the A500+ and A600. This means that it is a very simple to install with no fiddly ROM chips to stick in your machine or software incompatibilities with 2.04 software.

ECS features

The ECS was a second-generation custom Amiga chipset. It was a vast improvement over the OCS (Original Chipset) by increasing the amount of chip memory that could be accessed to two megabytes and could handle a greater variety of resolutions. ECS can be found in the A3000, A500+, and A600. The Enhanced Chip Set was required to use these functions.
  • 640x480 non-interlaced Productivity Mode (requires 31 kHz-capable monitor)
  • 1280x200 and 1280x400 Super-hires Modes
  • 800x600 requires Multisync
  • New genlock features

Hardware requirements

  • Requires any 2.0X ROM-ready Amiga 500, 600, 2000 or 3000 series computer
  • Amiga 2500, A2620 or 2630 requires rev-06 or greater ROM's on the accelerator card
  • ECS features require optional Enhanced Chip Set

Original Distribution

The original distribution consisted of:
  • 6 disks
  • 3-manual set
Users of Kickstart 1.3 who did not own a Kickstart 2.x ROM could buy it with the distribution files.
  • 2.0X ROM
  • 6 disks
  • 3-manual set.

New features

  • Dynamic Localization of Programs to different languages and locale
  • Includes CrossDOS for easy transfer of MS-DOS (R) and Amiga (R) files
  • Includes Postscript (R) Printer Driver
  • Supports Multiple Serial and Parallel Printer Preferences
  • New Preferences Editing
  • Motorola (R) 68040 compatible
  • Screen mode requester added for selection of screen mode or video mode.
