Modems and the Amiga
Almost any PC-compatible modem with the Amiga apart from the
internal PC variety. It's safer to go for the external models as
they are guaranteed to work with any computer. If you are using the
standard Amiga serial port you will also need to buy an adapter to
plug newer modems 9-pin into the Amigas 25-pin port. Owners of
Amigas with Zorro ports can also buy the ioExtender or MultiFace
card from your local dealer.
How fast is the standard serial port?
The speed of the serial port varies according to the speed of
your machine. It is possible to run the serial port at a speed of
38,400 BPS. If you have a '030 processor you will be able to run
the modem at 57,600. If you want to go even faster with fewer
errors a specialised serial card, such as the ones mentioned above
is required. The simple problem is that the Amigas serial port is
completely out of date and is not designed for fast transfer rates.
You can set the device to use and the transfer rate in your
communication software.
