FAST RAM- This is used for programs, the main
processor, and the storage of files to be loaded into chip ram.
Traditionally the custom chips cannot access it, which is why the
display always uses chip ram. Recently programs can use the CPU and
fast ram to manipulate images through a complete rewrite the
graphics library.
FAST- Federation Against Software Piracy. A
group that attempts to stop piracy by making it difficult to copy
software and prosecuting pirates.
FAT AGNUS- One of the custom chips found in the
A500 and A2000. It allowed the use of up to 1Mb Chip RAM.
FILE SYSTEM- The method that a computer stores
files.
FLOPPY- A floppy disk drive is the standard
interface fitted on all computers to spread information and
software. Most Amigas are fitted with a double-density drive, with
the exception of the A4000 and some A3000's that use a high-density
model.
FOLDER- Another name for drawer or
directory.
FONT- Also known as a typeface. A particular
design of text that vary in their size and legibility.
FORMAT- A program located in the system drawer
which "wipes" a disk by erasing all data on it.
FPU- Floating Point Unit. This maths
co-processor does mathematical calculations that would otherwise be
done by the CPU. This can make some software, particularly 3D and
Doom clones to run faster.
FPS- Frames Per Second. A measurement of how
fast an image, such as animation changes. Animations usually run at
24-35 frames per second convincing the brain that it is fluid
action.
FRACTAL- Fractional Dimension. A mathematical
concept that is based upon the principle that there are an infinite
number of dimensions.
FRAGMENTATION- The storage of a file in
different sections of memory or the hard drive. This decreases the
speed that it can be accessed at, slowing the system down.
FRAME GRABBER- This is similar to a digitiser
as it "grabs" images from a TV or video.
FUNCTION KEYS- The grey keys at the top of the
keyboard labelled F1 to 10.
