I am looking for a new, free file system for use with my Amiga
hard drive. What options are available?
The choice of a free file system restricts your choice,
excluding the fantastic commercial PFS2 (formerly AFS) system.
Fortunately, it is possible with three choices being available to
the bargain hunter.
Professional Filing System.
A two year old limited product. It is faster than FFS but does
not allow formatting of larger drives. It was produced as the
commercial Ami-File Safe, and has recently been released under the
original title. The most glaring problem is the lack of recovery
utilities yet available. Whilst it is very difficult to corrupt a
partition, when it is corrupted it is difficult to get it back.
L:FastFileSystem, FS 43.19 ( 7.Nov.97)
An update to the standard Amiga file system from Amiga
International that supports hard disks larger than 4GB
partitions.
The best thing about FastFileSystem is the amount of support from
3rd party software. It is available at http://www.amiga.de/.
SmartFileSystem.
A new filing system that is currently in beta that appears
extremely impressive. It includes support for 254 character file
names. It also includes the .deldir directory present in PFS and
PFS2, allowing the retrieval of deleted files. The disadvantage is
that, like PFS, SFS have no tools to repair your HD if you have a
hard drive crash.
